Project Management

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog. This week I am going to talk about project management and in particular why some companies seem to struggle with information systems implementation.

According to (Investopedia, 2023) project management involves the organisation and planning of a company’s resources to get a specific task to reach completion and achieve their goals. Project managers tend to have the job of setting out the goals and objectives for the project and decide on who will carry out each role. In order for these changes and implementations to run smoothly there needs to be a clear plan in place. The more prepared and organised everyone gets for these information system changes will result in less confusion and challenges.

Often times companies seem to struggle with information systems implementation. According to Tony Zorc new information systems implementations fail mainly due to poor communication and poor planning. Some of the reasons why information systems implementations seem to fail are:

  • The system implemented can be too complex and difficult for staff to follow.
  • Staff seem to deprioritize the new systems implementation thus leading to projects falling behind and wasting money.
  • These new implementations are very costly. Many of these implementations fail as the company doesn’t realise how much money is needed to keep things running. This leads to a huge loss and no return on investment.
  • Staff are not prepared or trained highly enough to deal with these new changes and don’t know exactly what they are doing. Employees must be trained and given the skills necessary to complete the project.
  • There may be a lack of cooperation and willingness amongst staff to deal with these new difficult changes. This will also lead to a decline in morale and productivity.
  • New implementations may cause a breakdown in communications amongst colleagues and management. People may be unaware of their exact roles and responsibilities.
